Belmont Death Scene and Hoarding Cleanup for Plainfield and Cannon Townships

Belmont is an unincorporated community in Plainfield Charter Township, sitting on the north bank of the Grand River at exit 95 of US 131, right where the Rogue River flows in. It has no city government of its own, but it does have its own post office, and the 49306 ZIP reaches east into Cannon Township. Reach our referral line and you are connected to an independent company for unattended death scenes, trauma cleanup, hoarded homes and biohazard problems across these two townships.

Belmont by ZIP

ZIP 49306

Plainfield Township holds about 60 percent of 49306 and Cannon Township the other 40, and no city or village sits inside it, so every address is township ground. It runs from the exit 95 interchange on US 131 and the meeting of the Rogue and Grand rivers east past Bear Creek into Cannon's rolling acreage, mixing 1990s and 2000s subdivisions, manufactured homes, river lots and wooded parcels along the White Pine Trail corridor.

A closer look at Belmont

The community was platted in 1874, and the Fred Meijer White Pine Trail still follows the old Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad grade through it on the way north to Rockford and Cedar Springs. Homes range from older houses near the river crossing to subdivisions built as Grand Rapids pushed north. Plainfield Township as a whole counted about 33,500 residents in 2020, with four separate school districts, including Rockford and Northview, splitting its territory. Northview, a separate unincorporated community, lies between Belmont and the Grand Rapids city line. Cannon Township broke away from Plainfield in 1845 and took its name from Cannonsburg, a hamlet laid out at the direction of investor LeGrand Cannon.

East of the Belmont core, Cannon Township opens into a more rural landscape. Its water comes from several small natural lakes and an artificial one, Lake Bella Vista, and the Grand River clips the township's southwest corner. Near the line between the two townships, Bear Creek meets the Grand at the old settlement of Chauncey. M-44, called Belding Road through Cannon, runs east and west through the middle of the township, while M-44 follows the East Beltline through eastern Plainfield.

Put together, that means riverfront lots with walkout basements, newer two-story homes in subdivisions, large wooded parcels with long drives and private wells, and a real share of manufactured homes, about one in seven homes in the ZIP. Lake homes and properties near the rivers can have damp lower levels, which affects how odor and moisture move after an incident. Explaining the layout, the number of floors involved and how a truck can reach the door saves time on the first visit.

After a death or crime in Belmont

Belmont has no police department of its own, so a 911 call here brings county deputies: both Plainfield and Cannon townships are served by the Kent County Sheriff's Office, and Plainfield also has dedicated community policing deputies. Michigan State Police patrol US 131. Deputies and detectives hold the property until their investigation is finished, then release it to the owner, family or landlord. Please leave the room as it is until that point. Homeowners associations in some subdivisions may have rules about dumpsters or trucks on the street, so a quick call to the HOA can avoid problems. Renters should contact the landlord, who usually hires the company. Photograph the affected rooms, call your insurer and get a report number from the deputy. After that, call our line and speak with an independent company that works Belmont and northeast Kent County.

Frequent requests

unattended death cleanup

Wooded lots in Cannon Township and quiet streets near the river can keep a death from being noticed quickly, especially for someone living alone. Fluids move through carpet and subfloor and can reach a walkout or basement below. Workers take out affected flooring and drywall, disinfect what remains and treat odor so the family can decide what comes next.

suicide and trauma cleanup

After a suicide or other traumatic loss at home, relatives should not have to clean the room themselves. A company working the Plainfield and Cannon township area can remove soiled items, disinfect surfaces and restore the space with discretion; ask whether it can arrive in unmarked vehicles. Ask that keepsakes found in the room be boxed separately for relatives to review.

hoarded homes

Large homes on acreage, detached garages and sheds can hold years of accumulation without neighbors noticing. The family sorts alongside the crew so documents, photographs and valuables are saved before the rest goes and the surfaces underneath, including pet or rodent waste, get cleaned. In HOA neighborhoods, settle container placement early so the job stays within the rules.

Questions we hear

Is Belmont a city with its own police?

No. Belmont is an unincorporated community inside Plainfield Charter Township, and the 49306 ZIP also covers part of Cannon Township. Neither township has its own officers, so sheriff's deputies from Kent County take calls in both. The deputy or detective on the case decides when the home is released and can give you a report number.

Our HOA has rules about dumpsters. Will that be a problem?

Usually not, as long as the association knows ahead of time. Find out what size container or truck is planned and how long it will stay, then share that with the HOA manager. Some companies haul with enclosed trucks instead, which can avoid placing a container on the driveway at all.

Will homeowners insurance help with cleanup after a death in Cannon Township?

Coverage depends on the policy and the circumstances. Some policies pay for sudden events but exclude long-term neglect, hoarding or pest damage. Contact your adjuster before work starts, send photos and request an itemized estimate from the company. For estate questions or disputes about who owns the property, speak with an attorney.
