Cleanup Referrals for Barry County Homes, Lakes and Farms

Barry County is lake and farm country between Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek and Lansing, with about 62,000 people and just one city, Hastings, which is also the county seat. Most residents live in small villages, unincorporated crossroads or on rural lots near lakes such as Gun, Crooked, Clear and Jordan. That settlement pattern shapes cleanup work in practical ways: long drives, private wells and septic, seasonal cottages and plenty of outbuildings. This page covers the medical examiner arrangement, the local offices you may contact, and what happens after you dial our referral line.

How death investigations work here

Barry is one of 13 counties whose medical examiner work is done by WMed, the WMU medical school, through its Medical Examiner and Forensic Services office in Kalamazoo. The county's own page lists that office's weekday and after-hours phone lines for families with records requests or questions.

Field investigators come out when a death is accidental, violent or otherwise unexplained, and they arrange transport of the deceased. They do not clean or restore the home. After police release the scene, that work is up to the family, estate or property owner, often with help from an insurer.

Funeral directors in Hastings, Middleville, Nashville and Delton deal with this office regularly and can explain timing for death certificates and cremation permits. Ask them for a realistic timeline before you plan a memorial. If an autopsy is ordered, it takes place at the examiner's Kalamazoo facility, so ask how that affects the schedule.

Sheriff, state police and village departments

The Barry County Sheriff's Office covers most of the townships, and the Michigan State Police Wayland Post serves the county as well. Hastings runs its own city police department, and the village of Nashville keeps a small police force of its own. Middleville has no department; since 1999 it has contracted with the sheriff, whose Middleville unit works from an office on East Main Street in the village.

That agency decides when the home is released. Get the report number and release date in writing, because your insurer and the probate court in Hastings may both ask for them.

Lakes, cottages and the off-season

The county is dotted with inland lakes, and many shorelines are lined with small cottages and year-round homes that started as summer places. Gun Lake, which the county shares with Allegan, Crooked Lake near Delton and Clear Lake near Dowling are good examples, along with the northern tip of Gull Lake and Jordan Lake on the Ionia County line.

Seasonal places are often closed from fall through spring. A death, a burst pipe that soaks a hoarded room, or a rodent problem can sit for months, and that changes the odor and contamination picture. Mention how long the place was closed when you call.

Lake associations sometimes control private roads and parking. Ask whether an association contact needs to know before a truck or trailer arrives.

Farmhouses, wells and outbuildings

Away from the lakes, Barry County is farmland, with older farmhouses, pole barns and equipment sheds on large parcels. Hoarding cleanouts here can stretch across several buildings, and old fuel, chemicals or animal waste may need separate handling. Old barns may also have weak floors or lofts, which affects how much can be carried out safely.

Nearly every rural home relies on a private well and septic system. The Barry-Eaton District Health Department, with a Barry County office on West Woodlawn Avenue in Hastings, handles environmental health questions if contamination reaches a well, septic tank or drain field.

Roads and travel times

No freeway crosses the county. Instead, state highways do the work: M-37 runs from the Kent County line through Hastings toward Battle Creek, M-43 links Delton and Hastings before heading toward Woodland, M-66 passes Nashville, and M-79 and M-179 fill in east and west. Expect longer drive times from Grand Rapids or Kalamazoo than the mileage suggests, especially behind farm equipment during planting and harvest.

Winter brings snow-covered gravel roads and drifting across open fields. In early spring, seasonal weight limits on county roads, the frost laws, can restrict heavy trucks, so a company may need a lighter vehicle for some rural jobs.

Calling our referral line

Our line refers you to independent cleanup companies; it does not do the work itself. A call from anywhere in Barry County is connected with a business serving your area, and you agree on price and schedule directly with that business.

Ask how it will handle and haul contaminated materials, what insurance it carries, and whether it will deal with your homeowner's insurer. A room-by-room written estimate is worth requesting before any work begins. Keep that estimate with your other estate papers.

Villages and townships by ZIP

Delton 49046

Delton is an unincorporated community of about 850 people in Barry Township, in the southwest part of the county. M-43 runs through the center of town, 14 miles to Hastings and 19 to Kalamazoo, and the eastern end of Crooked Lake lies on its west side. The 49046 ZIP spreads across Barry, Orangeville, Hope and Prairieville townships, mixing lake cottages and farms.

Dowling 49050

Dowling is a small unincorporated community in Baltimore Township, centered where M-37 meets East Dowling Road, about 9 miles south of Hastings and 16 north of Battle Creek. Part of Clear Lake falls within it. Most of the 49050 ZIP lies in Johnstown and Baltimore townships, with more in Maple Grove, Hope and Assyria. Much of the land counted as Dowling actually carries a Hastings ZIP. Expect rural homes and lake properties.

Freeport 49325

Freeport is a village of about 540 people, mostly in Irving Township with a small part in Carlton Township, near the county's northern edge. Its 49325 ZIP crosses two county lines: besides Carlton and Irving townships, it takes in part of Campbell Township in Ionia County and part of Bowne Township in Kent County. Farms and rural lots make up most addresses.

Hickory Corners 49060

Hickory Corners is an unincorporated community of about 300 people in Barry Township, at Kellogg School Road and West Hickory Road near Lawrence Lake. Its 49060 ZIP reaches beyond the county: Roughly a quarter of it lies in Ross Township of Kalamazoo County, including part of the South Gull Lake area, with the rest in Barry and Prairieville townships.

Nashville 49073

Nashville is a village of about 1,500 people on the Thornapple River, mostly in Castleton Township with a small part in Maple Grove Township. It grew around sawmills, a gristmill and a railroad grain elevator in the 1800s. The 49073 ZIP covers much of Maple Grove and Castleton townships and reaches into Kalamo Township in Eaton County. M-66 serves the village.

Woodland 48897

Woodland is a village of about 390 people in Woodland Township, in the northeast corner of the county. It is a small farm town and a bedroom community for both the Lansing and Grand Rapids areas. The 48897 ZIP is mostly Woodland Township, with about a quarter in Castleton Township and a sliver of Sunfield Township in Eaton County. The county's only remaining rail line crosses this township.

Barry County questions

Who do I call about the medical examiner's report for a death near Hastings?

The county's examiner service comes from the WMU medical school's pathology department in Kalamazoo. The county lists contact details for that service, and the funeral home can also help you request records. The office handles the investigation and paperwork, not the house, so plan the cleanup separately once police release the home.

Our family cottage on a Barry County lake was closed all winter. Is that a bigger job?

Often it is, because time and temperature swings let odor and moisture spread into furniture, carpet and wood. Pests can also move in. Before you call, note when the cottage was last opened, whether power and water are on, and whether a lake association controls the road. Those details help a company plan equipment and time.

Does a private well or septic system change a cleanup in rural Barry County?

It can. Companies avoid sending contaminated water into a septic system, and anything that may have reached a well raises separate questions. The Barry-Eaton District Health Department can advise on testing or repairs. Tell the cleanup company up front that the home uses a well and septic, and where they are on the lot.
