Caledonia and Dutton Area Biohazard and Death Cleanup Help

The village of Caledonia covers less than a square and a half miles along M-37, yet the 49316 ZIP fans out across Caledonia and Gaines townships and south into Allegan County's Leighton Township. That takes in the Dutton area, new subdivisions off M-6 and farms along the Thornapple River. From any of those homes, one call gets you matched with an independent local firm for death, trauma, hoarding or biohazard work.

Call the Caledonia line(616) 888-7427

After a death or crime in Caledonia

Your first call in any emergency is 911. There is no village police department here, so the Kent County Sheriff's Office covers the village of Caledonia, Caledonia Township and Gaines Township. South of the county line, Leighton Township shares two Allegan County Sheriff's deputies with Dorr Township under a formal agreement, and the Thornapple Township corner is served by the Barry County Sheriff along with Michigan State Police. Let the responding agency and any death investigator finish and release the home, and keep the incident number. Many newer neighborhoods have HOAs with rules about dumpsters and contractor hours, so check with the association before work is scheduled. If an aging parent lived alone in a farmhouse, gather keys and confirm who can approve work.

A short Caledonia to-do list

  1. Village and township homes in Kent County are Kent County Sheriff calls, not village police.
  2. Leighton Township addresses are in Allegan County; that county's sheriff handles reports there.
  3. Ask your HOA about dumpster placement and work hours before cleanup begins in newer subdivisions.
  4. Older farmhouses with fieldstone cellars or crawlspaces need a different approach; describe the foundation.
  5. Thornapple River frontage lots may have tight access; mention slopes or narrow drives when calling.

Where Caledonia mail goes

ZIP 49316

Gaines Township makes up about 41 percent of 49316 and Caledonia Township about 38, so the Dutton area off 68th Street and the subdivisions near M-6 share a mailing city with the village on M-37. Another 18 percent lies in Leighton Township in Allegan County, and a small corner reaches Thornapple Township in Barry County. The village itself is only about 2 percent. Newer homes dominate, but some farmhouses predate 1940.

Getting to know Caledonia

Caledonia was incorporated as a village in 1888, and it still feels like a small-town center for a fast-growing area. The village counted 1,622 residents in 2020, while Caledonia Charter Township around it grew from 12,332 to 15,811 over the decade and neighboring Gaines Charter Township reached 28,812. Caledonia Community Schools ties much of the ZIP together, with Emmons Lake Elementary, Kraft Meadows Intermediate and Duncan Lake Middle School all inside the village.

Most housing here is recent. Half of all homes in 49316 were built in 2000 or later, and about nine in ten are owner-occupied. Still, about 8 percent predate 1940, a higher share than in neighboring Byron Center's ZIP. One week's job might be a three-year-old two-story with a finished walkout, the next a century-old farmhouse with a fieldstone cellar, and the methods differ a great deal between the two.

The Thornapple River flows north through the middle of Caledonia Township, joined by the Coldwater River from the southeast, and the old mill settlement of Alaska sits on its banks. M-37 runs along the village's eastern edge as Cherry Valley Avenue, and the M-6 expressway clips the township's northwest corner with an interchange at M-37. Dutton, centered on Dutton Avenue and 68th Street, anchors the Gaines side. Riverfront lots, long country driveways and newer streets with HOA rules each bring their own access questions.

Frequent requests

late-found deaths

Whether the home is a new build with an open plan or a farmhouse with plaster walls, a death discovered late leaves fluids and odor that travel into subfloors, ductwork and lower levels. Expect the company to trace the full extent, tear out materials beyond saving, seal the framing and confirm the smell is gone before any rebuild. Written documentation helps with insurance.

blood and body fluid cleanup

An accident in the barn or workshop, a fall down basement stairs or a sudden medical crisis may leave blood on carpet, concrete, wood floors and vehicles. In homes on wells and septic, rinsing contamination down a drain is not the answer. You should hear exactly how affected surfaces will be removed or disinfected, and how bagged medical waste leaves the property.

Hoarding cleanup

Hoarding can hide in plain sight on big suburban lots and farm properties around Caledonia, spreading from a house into the garage, pole barn and sheds. Sorting carefully matters as much as hauling. Photos, documents and heirlooms need protecting, rodents and spoiled food need safe handling, and container sizes have to suit HOA limits or a farm lane, with family members deciding what stays.

Questions we hear

Does the village of Caledonia have its own police?

No. The Kent County Sheriff's Office provides law enforcement for the village and for Caledonia and Gaines townships. If your 49316 home is in Leighton Township, the Allegan County Sheriff's Office handles it, and the small Barry County corner goes to the Barry County Sheriff. Check your tax bill for the township and county if you are unsure.

Can belongings be saved from a contaminated room?

Often some can. Hard, nonporous things like dishes, metal tools, glass and many keepsakes usually come clean with proper disinfection, but porous items that absorbed fluids, such as mattresses, upholstered furniture and carpet, generally cannot. Let the company know early which items matter most, and ask for photos of anything they recommend discarding so you have a record.

Is there anything I should do before the company arrives?

Keep the area closed off and avoid touching contaminated items. If odor is spreading, shutting off the furnace or air-conditioning fan can help. Gather the incident number, the name of whoever is authorizing work, and any HOA or landlord contact. Remove pets from the home if you can. Leave cleaning itself to the professionals.
